Liahona

The Liahona compass was given to Lehi to direct his family through the “more fertile parts of the wilderness” to the Promised Land. “And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness.” (1 Nephi 16:10) The Liahona only worked according to faith and diligence. When there was disobedience, the spindle stopped working. At times, writing would appear on the Liahona to “give us understanding concerning the ways of the Lord”. Lehi passed it on to Nephi. The Book of Mormon records that it was passed down through Nephite Prophets. King Benjamin gave the Liahona to Mosiah. In the Doctrine and Covenants 17:1 we learn that by faith the Three Witnesses would also be able to see the Liahona.

Captain Moroni became the commander of the Nephite army at the young age of 25. He is best known for the "Title of Liberty" which he made by tearing off a piece of his coat and writing on it: "In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children." The Book of Mormon tells how he used this flag to rally his people toward righteousness.

Alma, the elder, was a priest of wicked King Noah. He believed the testimony of the prophet Abinadi and recorded his words. Alma repented of his sins and became a courageous servant of God. The Book of Mormon tells how he taught, baptized, and ordained priests at a place called the Waters of Mormon. Later, Alma established the Church of Christ throughout Zarahemla and taught the people to trust in the Lord.

Lehi was the first prophet in The Book of Mormon. Six hundred years before Christ, Lehi was warned by the Lord to leave his home to avoid the impending destruction of Jerusalem. Lehi led his family and others on an amazing journey from Jerusalem to the western hemisphere. The Liahona he holds was a compass given to him by the Lord to lead his family on their journeys. The Liahona worked "according to the faith and diligence" of Lehi and his people.

Laman, the oldest son of Lehi and Sariah, was stubborn, hard-hearted, and did not believe in the righteous teachings of his father, Lehi. The Book of Mormon records that Laman was so rebellious that he refused to listen when an angel from the Lord told him to change his behavior. Laman was a troublemaker and seldom helped his family. His wickedness caused his parents a great deal of pain and sorrow.

Lemuel was the second son of Lehi and Sariah. He was a lot like his older brother Laman. He too, was stubborn and rebellious. Lemuel was jealous of his younger brother Nephi and was disobedient and spiteful to his parents. He did not believe in the righteous teachings of his father, Lehi. Lemuels example in The Book of Mormon teaches us what happens when we do not choose the right.

Moroni was the last of the valiant Nephite prophets and eyewitness to their total destruction. He wandered across the Americas, keeping the records safe while hiding from the Lamanites. He finished the sacred history, adding his heartfelt final farewell. The Book of Mormon tells how he hid the golden plates in the earth at Hill Cumorah. They remained safe until Moroni, as a heavenly messenger, returned in 1827 and delivered the sacred records to the Prophet Joseph Smith.

The Brother of Jared was highly favored of the Lord because of his exceeding great faith. The Book of Mormon tells how he was instructed to build 8 barges to “...go forth across this raging deep in darkness.” So the people could have light, he “...did molten out of a rock sixteen small stones.” He asked the Lord to light them. The Lord touched the stones one by one with his finger. Because of his perfect faith “...the veil was taken from off the eyes of the Bother of Jared, and he saw the finger of the Lord.”
